Re-Piping
…when and why you will need it.

If your home was built, or had water pipe repairs between 1978 and 1995, you should take a few minutes and read this.

On second thought, everyone  should read this because during the last several months we have had triple the number of calls for homes to be re-piped and these homes had Copper Pipes and were only a few years old!

First, a quick background…Polybutylene, or PB as it is called, is a form of plastic resin that was used extensively in the manufacture of water supply piping from 1978 until 1995.

Due to the low cost of the piping, PB systems were viewed as ‘the pipe of the future’ and it was used extensively as a substitute for the traditional, more costly, Copper Piping and was used in both mobile and residential homes, not exclusively in mobile homes as many believe.

Oxidants such as chlorine, as well as other household products, react with the polybutylene piping and plastic fittings and cause them to scale, flake and eventually become brittle - compromising the basic structural integrity of the plumbing system.

As time goes by, the pipes become weaker and may fail without any warning whatsoever, causing costly water damage to your home and personal belongings.  Home owners are unaware of the fact they have pipes that resemble ticking water bombs!

Recently we have had an influx of calls from people with copper pipes in newer homes, 8 to 9 years old.  The copper pipes have developed ‘pin hole’ leaks that allow the water to seep through walls and cement floors, effecting carpeting or tile flooring.

If you are asking yourself, ‘How will I know if I need to have my home re-piped’ or ‘should I have my home re-piped before a leak occurs to prevent this problem’, here are a few things to watch for…any one of them can signal a potential problem:

·        You feel a hot or warm spot on the floor.

·        There is no water running in your home yet you hear what sounds like water running in another part of the house.

·        You find a wet spot on a wall, in a closet or under a cabinet.

·        You find a wet or damp spot on the floor.

·        There is water dripping from beneath your mobile home.

·        Your water bill suddenly jumps without cause.

If any of these things occur, look at your water meter and if it is spinning around at a rapid pace, you need to call us.

It is unfortunate you will need to re-pipe your home however; it really is similar to any other household maintenance such as installing new windows or a new carpet.  The only difference is you never know when you will have to have it done.  Many people however, have it done before  the problem arises and save themselves both unnecessary expenses and heartache.

A re-piping, or as some call it, a re-plum, is the complete replacement of the water distribution system in your home.  All pipe fittings, stop valves and supply lines are replaced with CPVC pipe.  Water is restored daily at the end of the day’s work to insure the livability of the home and cause you as little inconvenience as possible.

We at Marino Plumbing Inc. are very proud of our reputation as experts in re-piping homes with defective Polybutylene pipe, problematic Copper Pipe and corroded Galvanized pipe.

All pipes will be replaced with the product required per local plumbing codes and approved materials, such as CPVC.  All work will be done by Master Plumber, John, V. Marino III, who has over 25 year experience in all areas of plumbing.

Please, before re-piping you home, call us for an evaluation and free estimate. You need to entrust your home to an experienced, reliable and qualified plumber.

We look forward to hearing from you, and meeting you, in the near future.
